We took advantage of this large mirror for a family photo. They also had many different rocks and gems for sale, some were even made into jewelry. Ranging from smaller rocks with fish and trilobites for under $5 and then they even had a large fossil of a Mosasauras Jawbone that cost $700. I was surprised at the variety of fossils they had. Next to these fossils are descriptive signs about the different types of fossils. The Gift Shop was full of many items ranging from jewelry, rocks, fossils, clothing and various other things.Ĭash and I were amazed to see all the fossils for sale. Overall It wasn’t a big deal though, we had extra clothes packed Take it from me, after picking up Cale every so often, I got dirt from his shoes on my pants. It may be wet inside and you could potentially get dirty.It can prevent growth and damage the cave. There were many fun shapes throughout the cave and plenty of photo opportunities! The cave tour wasn’t too long and by the time you reach the end of it you get to walk back and just enjoy the cave from a different perspective. In some areas, lights are triggered as you listen so you can see exactly what is being talked about. As you walk you will reach stations with buttons that start the audio as you walk the path. The tour comes with headphones, they might look old but don’t let their looks fool you, they worked great for us. Our kids had no issues getting to the building, but you may want to keep it in mind when walking down the path.Īfter arriving at the visitor center building we got our tour tickets and got a brief description of how the tour works. The path to the visitor center and cave is fairly steep. You see many signs along the way but if you use a GPS you shouldn’t have any issues arriving. The cave is 7 miles from downtown and takes around 15 minutes from downtown. We had always seen many signs and advertisements for Onyx Cave during our other travels. It is the oldest toured cave in Arkansas. Onyx Cave Park has a Gift Shop, Fossil/Gem Find, Axe Throwing and of course the Cave tour! The cave was discovered in 1891 and has been toured since 1893. Next would be either War Eagle Cavern or Cosmic Cavern.We recently took a Cave Tour at Onyx Cave in Eureka Springs, Arkansas Maybe for the little ones, to make sure they are not overwhelmed by being in a small, dark space. Basic, but you are underground, and didn’t drive to far for the experience. The nearest cave is what I term a $5 cave, Onyx Cave (which is now up to $7.50 for adults). We have three near by, and one huge cave experience 2.5 hours away. When asked about kid-friendly things to do in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, I always ask a question in reply: What kind of kids do you have? Do they (or you) need a more amusement park-like atmosphere? Rides, shows and video games? Do they prefer the Branson-esque action, each vacation day packed with constant stimuli? Or would they enjoy something a little more outdoorsy, a little less commercial? We have lots of families stay with us – kids of all ages – and many find the variety of outdoor activities Eureka Springs offers refreshing.įor the more introspective kids, or parents who just want to expose their children to something other than theme parks all the time (I’m not knocking theme parks – I’m a huge Disney fan), I can suggest a few fun things.įirst, the caves.
